381. Fri 30/3/18: The Bricklayers Arms, Luton

Beer: Portobello Star 4.3%

Our plan this Friday night is/was to have a look at the refurbed Painters, nip in the Brickies, then go on to the mini beer festival that Chris is staging at The Black Horse.

This is phase two.

The Brickies is quiet. We play Words on the quiz machine. We play some other game too – can’t remember.

Not all brilliant and insightful these reports, are they? Hopefully the picture(s) will be good.

Back in the Brickies to end the evening. I’ve recorded more in the way of notes this time round – but we were clearly getting quite tired and emotional by this time.

My niece was baptised while we were away in Spain – so Steph and I missed it. We didn’t get her a gift. Is gifting part of the baptism deal? Doubtless she’ll have got summat. What, though, should I have bought her – a lion or a monkey? Leighton reckons he could get either – but that they’d come at a price. We don’t believe him.

The Stones are on the jukebox, as per usual. It’s Jumping Jack Flash, and the Brix is a gas.

We play on the quizzer again. Is it a new machine? We win nothing.

LUTON TOWN            1-2       WEST BROMWICH ALBION

First Town home league defeat in seventeen months (see report #314), so can’t really complain. What we can do, and do do, is wince at the quality of the opposition. There’s some good teams in this division… West Brom were quite a way better than the Town, especially in the second half.

Still, the weather’s nice.

The Brickies is busy, but not wedged. There’s a small group of fully polyestered-up Arsenal fans in… they had a half twelve kick-off so are presumably back from that. They’re locals, doubtlessly but/so their attendance is a little jarring. They mean no harm. They’re oblivious to their hometown incongruity.

Anyway, ‘cause of that we’ve been banished to the outside seating area – by them for whom gawping at Premier League matches on the telly in pubs is a weekend staple – before, but it’s the weather today. Very mild.

The mood is naturally somewhat downbeat, but there’s more optimism bandied about by my peers that I can personally muster at the moment.

Post WBA. Our first league defeat since March 2018. It doesn’t feel terrible – we played well, particularly in the first half. Those returning to the pub are in pretty decent spirits. WBA seemed to find a switch in the second half, scored two quick goals then controlled the game.

Chris from The Black Horse out again, as PtMF’s guest. Like last time out, he seemed to have a good time. Chatted a little bit to SRW about Clod Magazine and the Slow Night dj set in the following week. I was last to leave from our gang after sudden departures and me not really being quick or awake enough to realise. So, sat and daydreamed for a little while, grateful that any sign of rain had gone, before I set off for home.
