1374c. Sat 3/9/22: The Cavern Club, Liverpool

Beer: Camden Pale Ale 4.0%

Yes, well. Look. We know what we’re doing – we’re queuing (thankfully not too long) for a tourist trap which isn’t even the legendary original venue where Gerry and the Pacemakers etc played their early gigs. We KNOW. And yet, we’re on a very consciously touristy tourist trip with a Beatles theme, so there’s only one place to end the night.

It’s one of those occasions where the queues belie the fact that once inside, the club is fairly busy, but by no means rammed. Are people paid just to queue up, enter and go back out again? Maybe.

All around are pictures, guitars and memorabilia. As expected. I think I’m right in recalling a Denny Laine Lane… It’s loud, but it’s old beat music and the clientele look as if they maybe have caught the coattails of the Beat movement first time round. For all its naffness, the space is fine. The band are – no surprise – a covers band of oldish guys concentrating on Beatles numbers, although to be fair, there’s a fair old distorted sound on the guitar and the whole thing sounds ok.
