1591. Sat 2/9/23: The Bricklayers Arms, Luton

Beer: Leighton Buzzard Bavarian Dragon 4.1%

Here in support of Steve Whiting’s photo book, >200 colour pics of Kenilworth Road (pre-Bobbers modernisation), “It’s a Long Way to Luton Station”. It’s the second leg of the High Town Road launch: the first being in Brown Books, up the road. Hightown’s Premier bookshop. Lovely in there it is.

Brickies is lovely too. Hightown is lovely. I used to live here y’know.

Lovely, lovely – laid back Saturday late afternoon/very early evening with pals, partners and pints. We rarely if ever come down here on a non-football Saturday. It is of course a completely different dynamic – which I vaguely recall from when Thurls and I would spend far too much time and money in here; a quarter of a century ago. The same place, a very different atmosphere – one that one can recognise, but feels distanced from.

Anyway, took me back, is the laboured point. That the core of the group that started coming down here in the late 1980’s are here, with wives, reinforces happy nostalgia… as does the book about the place that most of us here have called “home” for several years before this was our local.

Steve sells a few. There are only a few punters in the pub. The book deserves to be sold out already.
